KG Meeting in Munich 2025

This is an original article written by Dr. Minhee Ryu from RNWOOD Plastic Surgery in Seoul, South Korea, translated in English for convenience:

At the KG Aesthetic Face Meeting in Munich 2025, held February 22–23, Dr. Minhee Ryu participated as an invited Faculty member, presenting on “Deep Plane Facelift and Surgical Anatomy” in the opening session. He explained the evolution, technique, and anatomy of the Deep Plane Facelift and noted with pride that international expert Dr. Giovanni Botti used illustrations from his 2015 publication.

The session, moderated by Dr. Roy Kim and Dr. Caroline Kim, highlighted differing facelift philosophies, though time constraints limited discussion. In the second session, Dr. Ryu addressed key differences between Asian and Western facial anatomy, emphasizing his commitment to tailored, safe surgical approaches and continued global academic collaboration.

Dr. Ryu also reconnected with colleagues including Professor Andreas Kehrer, Dr. Daniel Lonic, and Dr. Sandra Munchow. At the Bavarian Gala Night, he enjoyed traditional music, food, and hospitality, receiving a Bayern Munich scarf as a meaningful gift.

He concluded the meeting grateful for the opportunity to share his expertise with leading surgeons from Europe and the United States and expressed appreciation for Dr. Caroline Kim’s efforts in organizing the event.

The KG Aesthetic Face Meeting in Munich 2025 was held in Munich, Germany, from February 22nd to 23rd. I was invited as a Faculty and took on the roles of a presenter and moderator.

In the first session of the conference, "Session 1 | Face1a - Deep Plane Facelift: Revolution or Risk?", I presented "Deep Plane Facelift and Surgical Anatomy". Deep Plane Facelift, which is a worldwide madness, it is the hottest issue among plastic surgeons. I explained the history of DEEP PLANE FACELIFT, my technique, and Surgical Anatomy in detail with videos.

The second speaker, Dr Alexis Verpaele, is an expert on MACS Lift and Nanofat, and is one of the leading experts in Europe. Dr. Giovanni Botti from Italy is an expert who has been active worldwide based on the theory of High SMAS Facelift. During his lecture, I saw that he used the Medical Illustrations from my paper published in 2015. I felt a sense of accomplishment and pride when a global expert cited my paper in his lecture.

The purpose of this session was to debate on DEEP PLANE FACELIFT, and I positively explained its essential aspects, while the other two speakers emphasized their own techniques. It was unfortunate that there was no discussion due to time constraints. Botti will be joining us again as a panelist at the Cairo Face Meeting 2025 in April and ISAPS Olympiad in Singapore in June 2025, and I look forward to active discussions there.

The session moderators were Dr. Roy Kim from the US and Dr. Caroline Kim from Germany. Dr. Roy Kim is an Editor in PRS Journal who has contributed greatly to academic development and is someone I have wanted to meet for a long time. It was even more meaningful to meet her for the first time as a moderator and speaker.

Without Dr. Caroline Kim, this conference would not have been possible. Her planning, preparation, and execution played a major role. She came to Seoul last year and asked me to give a lecture, and I gladly accepted. Without her sincere request, I might not have attended.

The second session, 'Session 2 I Face1b – From Korea to Europe, from Skin to Bone', was co-chaired by Dr. Alexis Verpaele.

When there were no questions on the floor, Dr. Verpaele asked me a question. My answer was,
“Asians and Westerners have different facial features. In particular, Asians tend to have wide faces, so they are actively getting cheekbone and square jaw reduction surgery. On the other hand, Caucasians are prone to malar and mandible angle deficiency, so augmentation of those areas is required. Therefore, there are differences in surgical techniques between Easterners and Westerners.”

This topic is my lifelong theme. I will closely analyze the characteristics of each race and perform the safest and best treatment for them. I will work closely with world-class Facelift experts and continue to contribute to academic development.

I also met some good friends in Munich, Germany. Professor Andreas Kehrer gave a wonderful lecture on "Deep Plane Facelift and Neck Lift – Relevant Anatomy Regarding Facial Nerves and Ligaments. A Facial Palsy Surgeon’s Perspective". I attended MAFAC as a student at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, USA last year and have fond memories of working with him there.

Dr. Daniel Lonic was with me at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in 2015, when I was an invited Faculty member to present on Facelift.

Dr. Sandra Munchow came to Seoul last year to observe the surgery. It was nice to see everyone again.

Bavarian Gala Night at Donisl, Munich

There was a welcome dinner with a Bavarian traditional dress code. Bavarian traditional music was played colorfully from beginning to end, and the dancing and performances were very impressive.

The traditional German food and beer were also great.

I received a scarf from Bayern Munich Football Club as a gift, which I also really liked. Among the precious ties between Korea and Germany, soccer cannot be left out, and Cha Bum-geun and Son Heung-min are legends who played in Germany. I am also proud of Bayern Munich's Kim Min-jae. What touched me the most was the warm and sincere hospitality.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my deep-hearted German friends.

I took some time to visit the exhibition hall. I visited the ‘House of Banksy’ at the recommendation of Director Ahn Geon-yeong, and savored the works of the unique master. I also stopped by just before leaving, saw the works of Rubens and Rembrant, and bought a few mugs.

It was an honor to share the knowledge and experience of DEEP PLANE FACELIFT with the masters of Europe and the United States. We salute Dr Caroline Kim for her dedication and hard work, and look forward to meeting her again soon.
