This is an original article written by Dr. Minhee Ryu from RNWOOD Plastic Surgery in Seoul, South Korea, translated in English for convenience:
The 40th MAPACS International Congress was held in Kuala Lumpur from May 24–26, celebrating its 40th anniversary with leading plastic surgeons from over ten countries, including Dr. Maniram Ragbir (BAPRAS President) and Dr. Charles Randquist. From Korea, only Prof. J.P. Hong of Asan Medical Center and Dr. Minhee Ryu of RNWOOD Plastic Surgery were invited as speakers.
Dr. Ryu delivered a lecture on the Deep Plane Facelift, presenting advanced surgical techniques and emphasizing evolving trends toward precision, safety, and faster recovery. Her work received high praise from international colleagues, and the congress provided a platform for meaningful academic exchange and strengthened global collaboration in aesthetic surgery.

The International Congress of the Malaysian Association of Plastic, Aesthetic and Craniomaxillofacial Surgeons (MAPACS) was held in Kuala Lumpur from May 24–26, marking its 40th anniversary. Renowned plastic surgeons from over 10 countries were invited, including Dr. Maniram Ragbir, President of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS), and Sweden’s distinguished Dr. Charles Randquist. From Korea, only two speakers were invited: Prof. J.P. Hong of Asan Medical Center and myself.
In my lecture, “Deep Plane Facelift,” I began with an overview of its history and the evolution of its concepts. I then presented my own surgical techniques in detail, supported by surgical videos. During the discussion, I focused on explaining the surgical anatomy.
There were many questions and in-depth discussions about key aspects such as the extent of dissection. I could sense that the global trend in the Deep Plane Facelift is shifting slightly. I exchanged views with Dr. Charles Randquist, Dr. Kim Siea Lee, and Dr. Lok Huei Yap, and our opinions were well aligned: aiming for greater precision, safety, and faster recovery. It may sound obvious, but it carries deep meaning—not just focusing on results, but also minimizing problems. This is not new; it’s exactly what Dr. Mendelson and Dr. Nahai have long emphasized.
The BAPRAS President spoke positively about my surgical approach, and several colleagues requested to observe my surgeries or inquired about attending MAFAC. Although Prof. J.P. Hong could not attend in person, he joined online for his lecture and discussions. Many surgeons from Chang Gung Memorial Hospital were present as well, and I also learned a great deal from these highly skilled colleagues. Experiences like this always provide fresh motivation and inspiration.
I also had the pleasure of reconnecting with MAPACS President Dr. Regu Villanayer, world-renowned Dr. Kim Siea Lee, and Dr. Lok Huei Yap, who first invited me five years ago in Singapore. It was a joy to deepen friendships with colleagues from Singapore, Jakarta, and many other places.
After the official banquet, smaller groups continued the evening with lively conversations. I shared drinks and laughter with Prof. Lin and Prof. Hsiao of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, as well as Dr. Lee, whom I first met in Rio de Janeiro ten years ago and have since continued academic exchanges with. He studied in the UK and completed his fellowship at Chang Gung, where the professors we were drinking with had been his mentors. The night ended in high spirits.
This was my first visit to Malaysia, and my strongest impression was the high standard of the field. There are around 150 certified plastic surgeons in the country, with 5–6 new specialists qualifying each year. Most trained in the UK, Australia, or the US—true elites of the profession. Their pride and refined manner reminded me of Singaporean plastic surgeons. Naturally, the Q&A sessions were of a very high level, and I was deeply gratified to share knowledge with them. I look forward to meeting these colleagues often in the years ahead.
