Invited Lecture and Chair: IMCAS Asia 2019 Bali

 Invited Lecture and Chair:

IMCAS Asia 2019 Bali

This is an original article written by Dr. Minhee Ryu from RNWOOD Plastic Surgery in Seoul, South Korea, translated in English for convenience:

Dr. Minhee Ryu participated as an invited lecturer and session chair at IMCAS Asia 2019 in Bali, delivering two lectures on facial rejuvenation anatomy and surgery. The conference gathered experts from around the world, highlighting collaboration and innovation in aesthetic and anti-aging medicine. Dr. Ryu’s interactions with colleagues, including Prof. Chen and Dr. Patrick Huang, underscored growing academic exchange across Asia. The trip also offered meaningful family time, as Dr. Ryu shared memorable diving and jet-skiing experiences in Bali with his son.

The IMCAS (International Master Course on Aging Science) conference was held in Bali from July 5th to 7th. Led by French plastic surgeon Dr. Benjamin Ascher, it is a group that focuses not only on academic research in anti-aging, but also takes great interest in the business side of the field.

I gave two lectures on facial rejuvenation anatomy and surgery, and also served as a session moderator. During my facelift presentation, it was a delightful surprise to find that many of the chairs, speakers, and audience members were close friends, which made the moment even more special.

In particular, Prof. Chen, the president of the Taiwan Society of Plastic Surgery, who served as the session chair, has a meaningful story behind our encounter. He had attended my lecture and live surgery at the MEVOS conference held in Hangzhou this past May, and afterwards extended an invitation for me to present and perform surgery at the upcoming Taiwan Society of Plastic Surgery meeting this fall. Although I had already committed to another international conference around the same time and had to decline, he reached out again through a different channel—going so far as to personally arrange flight options and sincerely ask me to reconsider.

This level of interest was a first for me, and I was deeply honored and grateful. We were reunited at the lecture hall, and of course, it was a warm and joyful reunion. After exchanging smiles from afar, we shared a heartfelt hug at the end of the session. To make up for not being able to attend this fall, I promised to prioritize visiting Taiwan from late November to early December 2026.

I served as a session chair for two hours during the Eyelid Surgery and Minimally Invasive Procedures session. Perhaps because this conference originated in France, there seemed to be a strong presence from European participants. At times, I found it a bit challenging to communicate due to unfamiliar European accents. This experience reminded me of the importance of improving my communication skills not only in American or British English, but also in understanding various accents from Australia, Europe, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. I’ll continue to work on bridging those gaps.

This conference was special in its own way—because I brought my son along. Last year, during OSAPS 2018 in Bali, I had stayed at the same resort and had experienced firsthand how safe and well-equipped it was.

Looking back, I’ve been so busy that I feel I’ve missed out on watching my children grow. Seeing my son now entering adolescence, I realized that the time I have left with him at home isn’t all that long. Since he was on school break, it was the perfect opportunity for us to spend some meaningful time together—just the two of us.

In my mid-20s, before starting my internship as a newly minted doctor, I once traveled alone to Boracay, Philippines, to get my SCUBA certification—ending up completing the Advanced course as well. Ever since my student days, I had traveled to various places with friends to go diving, as I’ve always loved being in the water.

For my son, it was his very first time diving, but he showed no fear and thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact, he had such a great time that he wanted to go again the very next day.

On the third day, we chose to go jet skiing. After learning how to ride, my son took the wheel himself while I sat behind him, keeping an eye on things as we enjoyed the ride together. We flipped over twice, but everything was safe and we had a great time.

I participated in this conference at the invitation of Dr. Patrick Huang, the Scientific Chair of the event and also a friend from my study group. He is a dermatologist from Taiwan who is highly active on the global stage and academically outstanding.

While my main focus is facial anti-aging surgery, we share a deep mutual interest and understanding in facial anatomy and anti-aging approaches specifically for Asian faces. We promised to continue working together to contribute, even in small ways, to the advancement of aesthetic plastic surgery in Asia.

Bringing my son to the conference made the experience even more meaningful. It’s often difficult to spend time with family due to work, so I’ve come to realize the importance of making the most of any opportunity to be together—and I intend to do so more moving forward.

I also feel truly grateful that the number of like-minded colleagues continues to grow. Studying and having discussions together brings me so much joy. I’ll keep striving to improve myself so I can support and contribute more to my friends as well.
