Invited Faculty in PRS KOREA 2017
This is an original article written by Dr. Minhee Ryu from RNWOOD Plastic Surgery in Seoul, South Korea, translated in English for convenience:
Dr. Minhee Ryu participated as invited faculty and session chair at PRS KOREA 2017, held at the Grand Intercontinental Parnas in Seoul. He presented “Asian Facelift Using the SMAS Flap with Orbicularis Oculi Muscle,” introducing a technique for stable and lasting midface rejuvenation. Despite unexpected scheduling changes, the session concluded successfully with active discussion. The event, attended by over 1,500 participants from 23 countries, highlighted Korea’s leadership in global aesthetic surgery and strengthened international collaboration.

The International Conference of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (PRS KOREA 2017) was held at the Grand Intercontinental Parnasin Seoul from November 10 to 12. I presented and chaired the High Impact Presentation, Aesthetic 2 Session (Sunday, November 12, 14:00-14:50). The presentation was “Asian Facelift using the SMAS Flap with Orbicularis Oculi Muscle”.
The purpose of facelift surgery is to improve the facial contour by pulling the sagging of the lower face and midface. However, the midface is anatomically unclear and theories also vary. In some methods, the detached SMAS tissue is weak and easily torn, making it difficult to expect good results. I have been researching methods that can achieve stable and sustainable results, and have presented my experience and theories. I also mentioned this at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons Aesthetic Symposium (ASPS Aesthetica 2017) held in New Orleans.

There were some questions after the presentation, including how to apply the midface structures stably to surgery and data on the anatomical positioning relationship. There was also information on the Chinese lifting method and frequency. This is explained in detail in a paper that will be published soon, so I decided to share it as soon as I have the chance.
Although the presentation itself was completed without difficulty, there was an unexpected issue during the session. Of the six scheduled speakers, two from a university in Italy were unable to attend. Additionally, one speaker had a conflicting presentation in another session and had to present early and leave shortly thereafter.
Expecting time to be tight, I had initially planned for a tightly managed session. However, contrary to expectations, the order of presentations changed, and we ended up with significantly more time than anticipated. As a result, we had no choice but to extend the discussion period considerably. Feeling apologetic toward the audience, I found myself nervously dry-mouthed, and the time seemed to pass unusually slowly.
I stepped down from the moderator’s seat to join the panel discussion and respond to questions, while my co-chair, Director Kim, calmly brought the session to a close. This experience served as a valuable reminder that unexpected situations can arise at any time, and we must always be prepared.

Another welcome guest to the conference also attended: Dr. Mark Magnusson, the president of the Australian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, an editorial board member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (Aesthetic Surgery Journal), and a faculty member of the Melbourne Academy of Facial Anatomy (MAFAC). At a dinner party after the MAFAC course in San Diego this spring, he told me that he had been invited to present at the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons’ international conference and that he would be visiting Seoul.
I first became involved with MAFAC in 2012 and have been attending every year since 2016 as a faculty member. I was grateful for the warm welcome and consideration Dr. Magnusson gave me every meeting, so I promised to treat him to a meal on his first visit to Seoul. Dr. Lee, a fellow specialist, had also participated in MAFAC and was an old acquaintance, so we sat down together.
The Korean Society of Plastic Surgeons has been holding the conference as an international conference since last year. It was held successfully with a total of 1,500 participants from 23 countries. Every year, a guest nation is selected to deepen academic exchanges and friendships. This year, Taiwan was selected. Taiwan has developed orthognathic surgery and microsurgery to a great extent, centered around Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, and there are many exchanges with Korean plastic surgery specialists. I was also invited to the 2015 Taiwan Chang Gung Hospital Cosmetic Surgery Symposium and shared my experience, and I was very impressed by their expertise and pride.
Many of the colleagues I was acquainted with during that time attended the conference, and we exchanged warm greetings. Professor Liao from Zhanggong Hospital mentioned that he is planning a symposium with the intention of inviting both Professor Wang—widely recognized as the foremost expert in facial rejuvenation surgery in China—and myself. He stated that he would contact us once the preparations were in place.
Professor Wang, formerly a professor of anatomy at Dalian Medical University in China, is regarded as a leading authority in Chinese facelift surgery. While I have had some personal correspondence with him, we have not yet engaged in in-depth academic exchange. I am greatly looking forward to the opportunity to share our experiences and learn from one another.
Given the high standing of Korean plastic surgery on the global stage, I believe it is essential to hold regular international academic conferences that reflect its prestige. It was truly encouraging to see colleagues from around the world gather in Korea to share their academic achievements and engage in meaningful exchange.
I sincerely hope that, through continued collaboration, this conference will establish itself as a leading event representing plastic surgery in Asia. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the executive committee and all those involved in organizing and successfully hosting the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons International Meeting.
