Invited as Faculty: Presentation in ASAPS 2013 New York
Presentation on Crow’s Feet Using Radiofrequency Current:
American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) conference 2013
This is an original article written by Dr. Minhee Ryu from RNWOOD Plastic Surgery in Seoul, South Korea, translated in English for convenience:
Dr. Minhee Ryu presented the paper “The Surgical Correction of Crow’s Feet Deformity Using Radiofrequency Current” at The Aesthetic Meeting 2013 hosted by the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) in New York. The presentation introduced a novel surgical method using radiofrequency energy to selectively treat the orbicularis oculi muscle responsible for crow’s feet, offering more natural and lasting results than Botox or traditional surgical approaches. The technique, developed through years of clinical experience, was well received by international experts, marking an important contribution to global wrinkle surgery.
This experience reinforced Dr. Ryu’s commitment to advancing Hybrid Facial Rejuvenation, a comprehensive approach addressing both facial volume loss and skin aging, tailored to the needs of Asian patients.

The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) holds its annual academic conference, The Aesthetic Meeting 2013 New York, which is regarded as one of the most prestigious gatherings in the field of aesthetic plastic surgery worldwide. This year, the event was held in Manhattan, New York from Thursday, April 11 to Tuesday, April 16.
Within the field of plastic surgery, topics such as wrinkle surgery excluding revision surgery, eyelid surgery, high-level lifting surgery, stem cell and autologous fat grafting techniques, and non-surgical methods were mainly discussed. Among these, the highest level of interest and presentation proportion was focused on wrinkle surgery related to aging and facial rejuvenation. At this event, I gave a presentation on my paper titled “The Surgical Correction of Crow’s Feet Deformity Using Radiofrequency Current.
This was a surgical method developed over several years by Director Ryu, a renowned expert in eyelid surgery. Crow’s feet wrinkle are caused by the continuous movement of the orbicularis oculi muscle, and the idea behind his surgery is to selectively disable that movement to achieve improvement.
Conventional treatment methods for wrinkles include botox injections and various surgical techniques. While botox is simple and effective, its results are temporary, and if overdone, it can lead to unnatural facial expressions and stiffness. Traditional surgical methods involved cutting the orbicularis oculi muscle, but this often failed to produce long-lasting results and could make the skin surface appear uneven.
“Radiofrequency Lifting for Crow’s Feet” is a method that uses radiofrequency to selectively treat the part of the orbicularis oculi muscle where crow’s feet form. This method overcomes the limitations of previous techniques and achieves more natural and lasting results. Through long-term clinical experience and analysis accumulated over several years, the procedure has shown consistent success, and its results were verified at this academic conference.
The fact that this surgical method was recognized by the world’s top experts at this conference signifies that this presentation not only introduces a new paradigm in crow’s feet treatment but is also a source of pride for the Korean plastic surgery community.
The presenter’s talk was scheduled in the prime slot of the conference, on Saturday, April 13 at 4:30 PM, in one of the largest rooms, which helped draw significant attention and anticipation for the topic, “Radiofrequency Midface Lifting for Crow’s Feet.”
Among five speakers, the presenter spoke second and delivered an in-depth explanation on the theory and surgical approach to crow’s feet wrinkles. The other four speakers were world-renowned experts from the U.S. and U.K. known for authoring influential papers and textbooks in facial wrinkle surgery.
During the allotted time, the presenter thoroughly explained the surgical method, outcomes, and how this treatment could represent a new paradigm in crow’s feet correction. They also provided clear answers to several follow-up questions.
The presentation and discussion concluded successfully, receiving positive attention and interest from many medical professionals from countries such as the United States, Europe, Brazil, Singapore, and Thailand. The paper is scheduled to be officially published soon, and it will provide more detailed information through that publication.
One of the most impressive takeaways from this conference was gaining insight into the latest trends in wrinkle surgery and recognizing the need to explore these areas further in the future. This was a valuable opportunity to experience various approaches not yet attempted in Asia, including Korea. Through in-depth research and consistent outcomes, there was a sense of mission to organize these findings and adapt them to the specific characteristics of East Asian patients- resulting in a meaningful and rewarding academic experience.
(Hybrid Facial Rejuvenation)
Alongside the world’s top experts, we were able to observe the latest trends in wrinkle surgery. The technique that the presenter focused on “Hybrid Facial Rejuvenation” was at the center of this movement. This concept aims to comprehensively address facial aging by simultaneously reducing volume loss and sagging due to aging, and improving skin aging. The ideal approach is to treat both the loss of volume and elasticity, and skin texture deterioration together.
It was an honor and a privilege to present my paper at one of the most prestigious academic conferences in the world, and I felt a deep sense of pride as I confidently stood before the world’s top experts. Although Korea currently leads the world in eyelid and nose surgery, the U.S. still holds the top position in wrinkle surgery. Therefore, I believe it’s important for us to follow closely and localize these techniques to suit the specific characteristics of Asian patients.
Starting with “Radiofrequency Lifting for Crow’s Feet,” I look forward to contributing to the establishment of a new global paradigm in wrinkle surgery.
